Happily Ever After Starts on the Ponderosa and Ends in Paradise
from Adam on 07/08/2026 06:08 AMThe morning after their wedding dawned bright and clear over the Ponderosa. Sunlight filtered through the tall pines, casting golden patches across the ranch yard as Adam Cartwright and his new wife, Valerie, prepared to begin the first journey of their married life. After making sure that the truck was loaded, Adam and Valerie began to say goodbye to the family. Ben was the first to embrace them both, making sure to make it last a few minutes so that they knew it was from Lynda too, who was at work. This gave Adam the opportunity to give Ben the spare key to his truck, so that Ben could pick it up later. After taking the key, Ben told them with a proud smile to take their time coming home because the Ponderosa would still be there when they are ready. After Ben was done embracing both Adam and Valerie, it was Hoss who then shook Adam's hand with enough enthusiasm to make them both laugh as Laura gave Valerie a big hug, whispering welcome to the family. After giving Valerie a hug, Laura went over to stand next to her husband, Hoss, who told Adam not to forget to bring them back one of those fancy Hawaiian shirts that Little Joe keeps talking about. Laura looked up at her husband with a smile and playfully shaking her head. Then Little Joe grinned as he said to bring back a story or two that would make him feel jealous. Everyone started to laugh as Adam turned to his bride. "We better get going if we are going to make the train on time," he told her as he went over to the truck and opened the passenger's door. Valerie quickly gave Hoss, Ben and Joe a hug before going over next to Adam, who then helped her into the truck. After making sure that Valerie was comfortable in the truck, Adam closed the passenger's door and then turned to his family. Adam gave Ben and Laura a hug and then turned and shook the hands of Hoss and Joe. And after saying goodbye to his family, Adam walked around his truck and got into the driver's side. Once he was sitting behind the steering wheel, Adam started the truck and soon him and Valerie were pulling away from the Ponderosa Ranch house. It was then that Valerie noticed in the passenger's side mirror the family continued waving goodbye even as they were getting smaller and smaller. It was then that Valerie admitted to Adam that she was already starting to miss them. "So am I," Adam replied as he reached over and took her hand into his gently. "That's how you know you've been blessed with a good family," he finished.
Valerie nodded in agreement as she let her hand slip into his, their fingers gently intertwining. They drove in complete comfortable silence for a while. Both lost in their own thoughts about their honeymoon. Finally, after giving Valerie's hand a gentle squeeze, it was Adam that broke the silence. "So, my love," he started with a smile on his face. "Are you excited to be going to Hawaii?" he asked her, already knowing the answer to that. Valerie nodded as she looked from the window to Adam, with a smile on her face. As Adam continued to drive, Valerie then slid over next to him. She wrapped her arm around his while still keeping her hand laced with his. She then laid her head on his shoulder, which made Adam smile. He glanced from the road to Valerie and back to the road, but not before gently placing a kiss on top of Valerie's head. "You just rest and enjoy the view," he told her and then went on. "We will be at the train depot before you know it," he added happily. A smile came over Valerie's face as she continued to lay there on Adam's shoulder just listening to her new husband speak. Once he was done speaking, the comfortable silence came over them once again. As Adam continued to drive, getting closer to Virginia City and the train depot, he couldn't help but wonder what Valerie was thinking about, though he did have a pretty good idea, but he didn't want to presume anything, just in case he was wrong. "You want to know what I'm thinking about?" he asked her as he once again breaking the silence. He glanced down at her and then back at the road. It was then that Valerie looked up at Adam as he went on speaking to her. "I'm thinking about laying on the beach next to my new wife," he told her dreamily as he went on speaking. "And then having long midnight walks and maybe midnight swims until we come together to make passionate love," he told her with a bit of a whisper in his voice. Adam paused for a few minutes and then went on speaking, this time it was about her and what she was thinking about. "Penny for your thoughts," he said softly as he gave her hand a gentle squeeze. As Adam waited for her to tell him what was on her mind, Adam went on speaking.
A Mother’s Day Rose for the Ponderosa Mother (2026)
from Adam on 07/07/2026 01:15 PMThe first rays of dawn spread across the Ponderosa, painting the tall pines in shades of gold. A cool spring breeze carried the scent of wildflowers through the open windows of Adam and Valerie's house, while in the distant nickering of horses drifted up from the barn. Adam Cartwright sat at the porch table with a steaming cup of coffee in front of him and warming his hands. He could hear in the distance the sound of the Ponderosa waking up, but his thoughts were fixed on the woman who was still asleep upstairs. It was Mother's Day and even though she wasn't quite a mother yet, but it wouldn't be long and he wanted to do something special for her now. As he was sitting there thinking about her and what she meant to him, a gentle smile crossed his face. Valerie had always been the heart of their home, but this year, Mother's Day held a deeper meaning for them. Within a few short months, she would bring their first child into the world. Every day, Adam found himself marveling at the quiet strength she carried so gracefully. Though her growing baby bum often left her tired by evening, she never complained, always putting everyone else before herself. It was at that moment that his gaze drifted toward the rose garden that Valerie had planted beside the house. Among the colorful blooms stood a single crimson rose, fresh with morning dew. It was perfect for what he had been planning. Adam took a couple of sips of his coffee, making sure not to burn his mouth as he did so. He knew that Valerie had never really cared for expensive gifts. What she treasured most was simple moments-a family supper, laughter echoing through the great room, and evenings spent watching the sunset from the porch with Adam's hand resting gently over the life growing beneath her heart. Adam took a couple more drinks of his coffee and then he took his cup into the house and grabbed a pair of flower clippers. Adam then went back outside and over to the rose garden. He then carefully clipped the rose, protecting each delicate petal. As he held it, he thought about the months they had spent dreaming together. He then started to imagine him teaching their son or daughter to ride across the Ponderosa, watching tiny boots race through the barn and hearing a child's laughter mingle with the familiar sounds of the ranch. But more than anything, he wanted Valerie to know how proud he was of her. She was already becoming an extraordinary mother long before the baby was born.
It was then that the screen door opened softly behind him. Adam turned with an affection grin, quickly and carefully hiding the rose behind his back. It was then that Valerie told him that he was up awfully early as one hand rested instinctively against her rounded belly. He couldn't help but smile as he spoke to her. "I had something important to take care of this morning," he told her. She looked with a smile on her face as she asked him if it was more important than breakfast. "I'd say so," he told her as he carefully walked over to her. Then stepping closer to him, he revealed the crimson rose and placed it gently in her hand. "Happy Mother's Day, my love," he whispered to her as he watched her facial expression. Valerie looked at the flower, then back at him, her eyes already filling with tears. That's when she said the baby wasn't even born yet, though she couldn't stop the happy tears which a few were already falling down her cheek. That was when Adam reached out for her free hand before resting it tenderly over the small life growing beneath her heart. "Our little one already has the best mother anyone could ask for," he said softly. "You've been loving this child from the very beginning. That's what makes today yours," he told her as he watched a couple of tears slip down Valerie's cheek. It was then that she leaned into him and Adam wrapped his arms around her carefully, being mindful of the precious child between them. That's when she whispered to him that she didn't know what she ever did to deserve him. Adam smiled as he gently rubbed her back. "You loved a stubborn Cartwright," Adam replied with a chuckle. "I'd say that deserves a medal," he finished, which made Valerie laugh through her tears the sound filling the quiet morning with warmth. Together they stood on the porch, Adam's hand resting protectively over hers on her rounded belly as the sun climbed above the pines. Adam knew that before long, the rest of the family would be waking up and ready to celebrate Lynda for Mother's Day, which they would eventually join them, but for now, Adam was only concerned about celebrating Valerie. "Now, why don't we get you inside and off your feet," he told her. "And while you are resting, I'll fix breakfast, and then later, we will get ready to go over to the Ponderosa Ranch house for a very important Mother's Day lunch for Lynda," Adam told her. "So, what do you say? Is my two precious angels hungry?" he asked with a smile on his face.
Easter Blessings Comes to the Ponderosa (2026)
from Adam on 07/07/2026 12:14 PMThe first light of Easter morning spread gently across the Ponderosa, painting the snow-capped Sierra peaks with shades of gold and rose. A cool breeze carried the scent of pin through the open windows of Adam and Valerie's new home, which Adam managed to get done with the help of his brother so that he and Valerie could move in before the snow came, while the sound of meadowlarks welcomed a brand-new day. Adam Cartwright stood on their porch with a steaming cup of coffee, watching the sunrise. Beside him, his wife, Valerie, slipped her hand into his, smiling as the church bells from Viriginia City echoed faintly across the valley. Valerie then began to speak and told Adam that today felt different which brought a smile to Adam's face as he spoke back to her. "That's Easter. It's a reminder that no matter how long the winter or how hard the journey, hope always comes again," he told her as he went on speaking. "Besides, you're still getting used to us having our own home, so that adds to the day being different," he told her as he took a drink of his coffee. Valerie and Adam stayed out on their porch until the sun was completely up. Then Adam turned to look at Valerie with a smile on his face. "What do you say we put our coffee, or rather my coffee and your hot tea, in a couple of to-go cups and finish getting ready to go over to the Ranch house for the Cartwright traditional Easter breakfast?" he asked her. He had noticed the past few days she hadn't been drinking coffee but rather hot tea and thought he didn't think much of it, he still couldn't help but wonder. Valerie nodded as she followed Adam back into the house. She had indeed been drinking more hot tea in the past few days that she would admit, she knew the reason why, though she wasn't ready to tell Adam just yet, at least not until she got confirmation first. After getting their to-go cups ready and then getting themselves ready, Adam and Valerie were soon in Adam's truck, heading over to the main Ranch house. It took them about 15 minutes or so to get from their house to the main ranch house, and as they were getting out of Adam's truck, they could hear the hustle and bustle of happy people and good smelling food. Inside, Ben and Lynda were in the kitchen finishing up the Cartwright traditional Easter breakfast, while Laura was setting the table.
Hoss and Little Joe was sitting in the living room, arguing over who would find the most hidden eggs after church, which caused Laura to roll her eyes as laughter filled the house, mingling with the aroma of fresh biscuits, cinnamon rolls and ham. Valerie smiled as Adam took her hand and walked into the house. She couldn't help but look around at the family she had come to love and a thought hit her. The Ponderosa wasn't just a ranch-it was home. She knew that every Easter brought new blessings, but this year felt especially meaningful. There was peace in the valley, love around the table, and the promise of new beginnings in every sunrise. That was when Valerie placed a hand on her stomach without anyone even noticing as she thought that this Easter not only brought all of that but hopefully it would bring a new Cartwright, though she wasn't about to say anything until she had it confirmed. And her plan was to have this done right after church, though she knew she would have to somehow get Adam distracted so he wouldn't ask questions. Anyway, after the last of the food was placed on the table and everyone was called Adam, after closing the door, hanging his hat up and his gun belt, escorted Valerie over to the table. He pulled the chair out for her, in the same manner that Hoss did for his wife and Ben did for his wife. And once everyone was sitting down, Ben bowed his head and began to give thanks by saying lord, thank you for the gift of this Easter morning, for family, friendship and the hope found in every new day. He also went on to ask for help to share his love with everyone who crosses their path. It was then that he said amen, which was followed by a chorus of amens from the rest of the family. Soon the food was being passed around as everyone was trying to talk all at once. It was then that Adam glanced at Valerie, his eyes warm with affection. He leaned over so that she could hear him. "Happy Easter," he said softly, but loud enough that she could here him. And as she smiled back, she whispered Happy Easter Adam. And though Valerie wasn't eating much breakfast, due to her stomach being upset, she still managed to get some food down so that nobody would get worried about her. It was at that point that nobody, especially Adam and Valerie, realized that before the day was over, unexpected visitors, surprising acts of kindness, and a long-waited hidden secret would make this Easter one that the Cartwright family would never forget.
Re: A Cowboy In Black's Love Song To An Angel
from Adam on 07/07/2026 11:00 AMAdam's expression softened the instant he heard his name on her lips. He smiled-the quiet, unmistakable smile that always seemed to be reserved just for her-and rested his forehead against hers as he closed his eyes for a heartbeat as if simply being there wased a burden he hadn't realized that he was carrying. "I am home," he said quietly. "Right where I belong," he added as his hand rose to cradle her cheek; his thumb brushing gently across her skin. He looked tired, the kind of tired that settled deeper than sore muscles, but there was a warmth in his eyes that hadn't faded. "I know," he admitted when she spoke of missing him. "And every mile I drove back tonight, I kept thinking about how long it's been since I've had a quiet evening with you," he confessed as he let out a small, self-conscious laugh and then went on speaking to her. "I've been stealing hours from sleep because I thought I could outrun the work. But as it turns out the work is always catching up with me," he told her as his gaze drifted towards the window for a few moments before returning to her. "The north pasture's fence needed rebuilding before the storms. The horses have been giving the hands more trouble than usual, and Pa has enough on his shoulders without me adding to it," he said as he shrugged lightly as he continued. "Then there are the books....supplies to order...men to pay....a dozen little things that become one very long day," he told her as his fingers intertwined with hers. "But that isn't the whole truth," he added and then hesitated, choosing his words with care. "I've also been trying to build something. Not another fence, but something for us," he said with a chuckle softly. And then a faint smile tugged at the corner of his mouth. Adam watched her face, hoping that she'd understand before even started to explain everything. Adam could see that she was listening to every word he had to say very closely, which helped with explaining what he was doing. Adam cleared his throat as he went on speaking. "There's that old meadow beyond the cottonwoods where we not only stopped that first spring ride, we took together but where I took you on a couple of picnics as well. You remember?" he asked her and she nodded she did. "In fact, you said it was the quietest place you'd ever seen," he added as his smile grew warmer. "Well, I've been clearing it whenever I could spare an hour. As well as cutting timber, hauling stone, and other things of that nature," he said and then went on.
"I wanted to surprise you with it, but you deserve to know why I'm always away working," he said as he lowered his eyes for a moment, almost embarrassed. Adam let out a sigh as he went on speaking. "Anyway, what I've been doing is building us a house down there," he told her. "It isn't much yet-the roof is only half done, the porch still needs rails and the fireplace that draws smoke more than it should," he said as he began to laugh under his breath and then continued. "But every board I've set, every stone I put in place, I've imagined you there," he told her as he squeezed her hand gently. "I wanted a place where the ranch couldn't find us. Where it could just be you and me making a life for ourselves. Somewhere we could wake to birds instead of ranch hands knocking at the door," he told her as his voice grew softer. "I thought if I worked hard enough, I'd finish it before telling you," he told her as his eyes, which held a full apology began to search hers. Adam didn't say anything for a little bit as he the guilt of letting his wife feel alone took over. "But in trying to make a future for us, I forgot to be in the present with you and for that I'm sorry, my sweet Valerie," he told her as he leaned forward and softly kissed her forehead with tender regret. "I never meant for you to feel alone," he said softly. "So far, I'm not doing a very good job at being a husband," he told her honestly. "But I do want you to know that every moment that I was away from you, I missed you more than words could ever say," he told her as he pulled Valerie closer to him. "And if I have to choose between another day's work or an evening holding you in my arms like this," he asked as his smile returned, both gentle and certain. "Then work can wait until morning," he told her but didn't stop there as he went on. "In fact, work can wait for a day or two, because tomorrow," he told her softly. "And the next day, I'm going to be making everything up to you," he told her. "And the first thing I'm going to do is make you breakfast in bed," he told her with a smile on his face. "And don't say I don't have to because I want to do this for you," he told her. "And then later on, I'm going to saddle up Sport and a horse for you, which I have the perfect one in mind, and if you like her, then I will give her to you," he told her and then went on speaking. "We will take a nice morning right that will lead us up to lunch, in which, I will then take you down to the site of our new home and have a picnic and maybe you can give me some suggestions on what you want as far as the house is concerned," he said softly. Then a small yawn slipped out of Adam, and he knew it was time to sleep. "But first we must get a good night's rest," he told her softly as he closed his eyes, though he could still see her beautiful face lying next to him.
Re: Dreaming of a White Ponderosa Christmas (2025)
from Adam on 07/07/2026 09:31 AMAdam had planned to stay at Valerie's home with her and just have a private Christmas celebration, but it occurred to him that what he was planning was too big for him to not share with his family. So, Adam convinced Valerie, though it didn't take too much convincing, to come out to the Ponderosa Ranch house to celebrate Christmas with his family, and soon they were standing in the middle of the living room teasing each other. Adam's grin spread slowly across his face, the kind that aways reached his eyes. "You've caught me," he admitted with a quit chuckle, his hands settling gently at her waist as he continued his thought. "Though I reckon I'd rather spend the whole evening distracting you," he told her and he leaned in and softly kissed her forehead as he then went back to looking deep into her eyes. His gaze lingered on her, warm with affection, before he glanced toward the half-decorated tree as he spoke to her again. "But if I don't help finish this tree, Pa'll have my hide, and Hoss will probably eat every last Christmas cookie before we are done, though Laura is making the cookies, so it's only fitting that he eats them all," he told her as she began to laugh, which the sound was light and bright enough to fill the room. That's when she said that she knew there was an ulterior motive. "There usually is," Adam told her with a wink. It was then that he reached for the candy cane that she still held between her fingers, but instead of hanging it on the tree, he hooked it carefully over one of the higher branches so she couldn't quite reach it. Then he stepped back beside her so he could admire their work. "There," he said. "Looks better already," he told her to which Valerie folded her arms, pretending to inspect the tree critically. She then told him that she supposed his contribution was acceptable. "High praise," he said with a smile on his face. She then began to laugh again as she leaned up and kissed Adam. Adam and Valerie continued decorating together in comfortable silence, passing ornaments back and forth, occasionally bumping shoulders or laughing whenever one of the ornaments refused to hang straight. As the tree was nearing completion, Valerie told Adam that she was going to go into the kitchen and see if Laura needed help with the cookies. Adam nodded happily as he continued working on the tree until it was completely done.
Across the room, the front door opened, which let in a burst of cold mountain air. Hoss came in and as he was stomping the snow off his boots, let out a loud Merry Christmas, while still managing to balance two large boxes in his arms. Adam turned to see his brother and he couldn't help but smile. "Easy there," Adam told Hoss. "You planning on bringing the whole mercantile home?" he asked, knowing that some of what Hoss had in those boxes were meant for his and Laura's house. Hoss grinned and said maybe though it was going to depend on whether or not Little Joe bought every ribbon in Virgina City. Little Joe couldn't help but yell back that he heard what Hoss said as he followed inside carrying another armful of parcels and stomping the snow off his boots. Once Joe and Hoss had their boots cleaned, they both headed for the kitchen, though Joe came back out with several gift-wrapped packages to be put under the tree. Ben was the last to come through the door, brushing the snow from his hat before pausing in the doorway and for a moment, he just simply watched his family. The glowing lights from the lamps, the completed tree, his sons laughing together as Laura entered with freshly baked cookies, which Hoss stole not only a fresh baked cookie but a kiss from her and Valerie standing beside Adam with happiness written plainly across her face. A quiet smile settled over Ben's features as he told everyone that it was good to see the house full of Christmas again. The room fell still for a heartbeat before Valerie crossed to Ben and slipped her arm through his. Then she told everyone that to her it felt like home. And as Ben gave her a side hug, he told her that it was home to all of them. Adam caught Hoss's eyes across the room as he was looking at his wife with tears in them. Hoss then glanced over at Adam and gave him a slight nod as Little Joe quickly looked away before Valerie could notice the tears. The surprise that Adam, along with his brothers help, had spent weeks planning and putting together, was safely hidden for just one more day. This caused Adam to smile to himself as he thought Valerie being right. He knew she could feel something coming, though she wasn't sure what it was. She had no idea that by Christmas morning surrounded by the family who already loved her as one of their own, she would discover that the greatest gift waiting beneath the tree wasn't wrapped in paper at all, but in a promise of forever.
Re: St Paddy's Day Mayhem Brings Celebrations and Tragedy
from Adam on 07/07/2026 08:27 AMAdam's smile came slowly, irresistibly, as he listened to every word that Valerie had to say. And by the time that Valerie had finished, the corners of his mouth had lifted into that familiar grin that always seemed to be reserved for her alone. It was then that he chuckled softly as she shook his head. "You certainly know how to keep a man's attention," he told her still smiling. Adam let his thumb brush lightly over the back of her hand before he intertwined his fingers with hers, holding them comfortably between the coffee cups. "To be very honest," he admitted as his voice dropping just enough that only she could hear. "I don't think I'd be able to take my eyes off of you no matter what you wore," he finished as his gaze lingered on her with unmistakable affection. "Though if you are planning to dress up for the party, I imagine the rest of Virginia City is going to have the same problem," he added as he gave a playful sigh, feigning resignation as he went on. "Which means I'll spend the whole evening reminding every fool in town that's your there with me and me only," he finished up as the teasing faded into something more earnest while he gently squeezed her hand. Then silence fell over them for a few minutes as it looked as Adam deep in thought about something as he let out a sigh. Then he went on to explain what he was actually thinking. "I'm not trying to keep you from going to town because I want to spoil your plans, Valerie," he started and then went on. "I just..." Adam started as he paused in hesitation for a heartbeat before finally smiling sheepishly. "I'd never forgive myself if something happened to you when I could have easily prevented it," he told her as his eyes searched hers, full of quiet sincerity. He could see in her eyes that she was really counting on going to town today, but with the way that the cowboys were acting in town, even though St. Patrick's Day was still two days away. Adam gave her hand another squeeze as he finally began to speak to her again. "So, humor me just this once," he told her and then went on. "I'll take you over to the ranch house, so you won't be here alone, and you can help with the planning of the party," he added and then went on.
"And if you still need ribbons or fabric or whatever it is ladies shop for before a celebration, then I will take you into town tomorrow myself," he said. It was then that the mischievous glint returned to his eyes. "And I wouldn't worry about my brothers," Adam said with a chuckle. "They get into trouble even with Pa watching them," he said laughing as he then took a drink of his coffee before speaking again. "Besides, I'm supposed to meet them at the ranch house so that we can go back to the northern pasture and finish up the fencing,' he told her before continuing. "Anyway, after we finish the fence this morning then Pa said we could have the rest of the day and tomorrow off, which would leave me free to take you to town tomorrow. This way, I can make sure that no rowdy, drunken cowboys bother you while you shop," he told her as he finally leaned in until he was only inches away from her face. "And if one particular man can't keep his eyes off you...," he murmured with a warm smile on his face. "I hope you'll forgive him. He's been hopelessly in love with you for quite some time," he said as he paused and then went on. "At least he's been in love with you since the moment he saved you from those rowdy cowboys at the train station," he told her softly as he tilted his head and leaned in and gently placed his lips on hers. Then he began to leave the most perfect and passionate kiss, to which Valerie didn't pull away, but rather pushed into, making it even more perfect and special. Finally, Adam broke it and smiled at his beloved. Then he finished his coffee as he let her hand go so that she could finish hers. "Now, while you finish up your coffee," he told her. "I'll get a jump start on the breakfast dishes so that I can take you over to the ranch house while me, Hoss and Joe, go to work," he told her as he got up and after pushing his chair in, picked up his coffee cup and headed over to the sink and began to run some hot soapy water so that he could start the dishes. As he waited for the sink to fill with hot and soapy water, he turned back to look at Valerie, who was still sitting at the table with a surprised look on her face. This made Adam chuckle as he began to speak to her. "You seemed surprised that a Cartwright is doing the dishes," Adam said with a playful smile on his face. "Well, we Cartwrights aren't just all about working on the ranch, you know," he added playfully.
Re: A Box of Chocolates and Red Roses Bring a Night of Passion and Romance (2026)
from Adam on 07/07/2026 07:17 AMAdam looked from the spoon to Valerie, then to the simmering pot, and a faint smile tugged at one corner of his mouth. "So,' he said as he folded his arms casually. "I just walked in here and already you have me assigned to quality control," he told her as he watched a smile come over her. That's when Valerie told him that she thought it suited his talent for careful judgement. "I'll try not to disappoint you," he told her as he accepted the wooden spoon and sampled the stew, taking his time in making a decision. Valerie watched him expectantly, amused by the thoughtful expression that settled over his face. It was then that Valerie asked him well, with a hopeful tone in her voice. Adam continued to consider what he was tasting for another moment or two before nodding. "It's very good," he finally told her as she then repeated very good with a feigning offense as she went on to ask if that was all. He looked at her with quiet amusement as he spoke again. "I wasn't finished," he told her as she arched an eyebrow. "It does, however, need one thing," he told her honestly. Valerie folded her arms and asked him what else it needed as she watched him dip the spoon for another taste. Once again, Adam didn't say anything for a few moments as a smile came over his face. "A second opinion," he said with a chuckle. Valerie laughed as she shook her head as she said that she should have known. " I happen to take my responsibilities very seriously," Adam said playfully as she came back saying with a playful tone that he took them so seriously that he had two helping before lunch. "I prefer to think of it as being very thorough," he added as his smile grow even bigger. Valerie shook her head and rolled her eyes playfully and affectionately as she called Adam impossible. "So, I've been told," he told her as he then set the spoon aside and stepped close again, his hands settling comfortably at her waist. The teasing faded into the easy silence they both cherished. The stew bubbled softly on the stove while the wind whispered outside their house windows. Adam rested his forehead lightly against then hers.
"You were right," he admitted quietly as he felt one of her hands land gently against his chest while the other was on his waist. That's when she asked him what she was right about. Adam couldn't help but smile again as he responded to her question. "I have been planning something for Valentine's Day,' he told her though he didn't say what he was planning. Valerie couldn't help but chuckle as she said she knew it. A soft chuckle also escaped him as he went on speaking. "I was hoping to keep it a surprise," he told her as she shook her head and told him that he still could. "I'm beginning to doubt that. You seem to have this ability to read me a little too well," he told her playfully and yet serious at the same time. Valerie smiled as she pulled her head back. She then reached up and brushed a stray lock of his dark hair away from his forehead. That's when she said she didn't need surprises, which caused Adam to look at her with a smile on his face. "No?" he asked her quizzical for a few minutes as she shook her head and told him that all she needed was this moment they were sharing. Adam searched her face still wearing that quizzical look on his face. "This?" he asked still not fully understanding until she explained that all she needed was for him to come home and coming into the kitchen to be with her after a long day. Then sitting down together and not only sharing a meal together but sharing things that happened throughout their days. Valerie paused for a few minutes as she finished telling him that was enough for her. After she spoke, Adam didn't say anything for a long moment. His dark green eyes softened with quiet affection. And as Adam wrapped his arms tighter around her, he began to speak to her softly. "Valerie," he finally said with a smile on his face as he looked deep into her eyes. "You've given me something I never expected to find," he told her. It was then that she asked what that was. He smiled even bigger, a genuine smile that just happened to reach his eyes. "You gave me peace," he told her softly. He could see her expression warming as she held him as tight as he was holding her. That's when she told him that he gave her the same thing. It was then that the kettle began to whistle softly, breaking the stillness between them.
Valerie couldn't help but laugh as she said that lunch wasn't going to wait for them. "No, though I suspect we've already delayed it long enough," he said with a smile on his face. Adam then reached for a couple of bowls while Valerie gave the stew one last stir. Adam and Valerie moved around each other with the effortless familiarity of two people who knew each other's rhythms by heart. Outside, the Ponderosa lay quiet beneath the winter sky, but inside the kitchen there was warmth, laughter and the simple comfort of being exactly where they both wanted to be. As Valerie finally started to put some stew in each of the bowls, Adam then got into silverware drawer and pulled out two spoons. He placed one in each of the bowls and when they were ready to go, he picked up the two bowls and carried them over to the table and placed them in front of both his and Valerie's chair. Valerie, who didn't mention that she had made some homemade bread to go with their lunch, was over at the counter slicing up the still very warm bread. As Valerie was cutting the bread into slices, the aroma of bread filled the air and made its way over to Adam, who then went directly to the fridge to get the butter and the homemade peach jam that Valerie had made. Then he had to stop once more at the silverware door to grab a couple of butter knives as Valerie was putting the slices of bread on a saucer so she could take it over to the table with the greatest of ease. After sitting it down in the middle of the table, she sat down as Adam joined her with the butter, jam and the two knives. After they each took a knife and after the butter and jam was opened, they both began to fix them each a couple slices of bread with butter and jam and once that was done, they were soon eating their lunch in silence for a while, not knowing that they were both thinking about Valentine's Day, which was just a week away. And as Adam took his first bite of the stew before he began to speak to her. "I was right about what I said earlier," Adam said as he tore a piece off his butter and jam as Valerie looked at him with a puzzled look. "This is definitely one of the best stews I have ever had," he said with a warm smile on his face while finally putting the piece of butter and jam into his mouth and began to eat it with pride as he gathered another spoonful of stew on his spoon and ready to eat once the bread was gone from his mouth.
Re: Wedding Bells are Ringing for a Special Couple of Virginia City
from Adam on 07/07/2026 05:00 AMThe guests in the chapel waited in quiet anticipation as they waited for the bride to show up. Outside, sunlight filtered through the towering pines, painting ribbons of gold across the stone walkway. Gentle mountain air carried the fragrance of wildflowers, and somewhere in the distance, a meadowlark sang as though it knew this day would be remembered for years to come. Inside, every pew was filled. Neighbors from the Ponderosa sat beside friends who had traveled from Viriginia City. Ranch hands, townsfolk, and old family friends spoke in hushed voices while soft music floated around the little church. And at the front stood Ben Cartwright. His hands were clasped loosely before him, though the proud smile on his face betrayed the emotion welling beneath his calm exterior. Beside him waited Hoss and Little Joe, both dressed in their finest, exchanging quiet remarks hat did little to hide their excitement. And then there was Adam, who was first born and yet the second one to get married as Hoss had already married the love of his life. Anyway, Adam stood at the altar with remarkable composure-or at least he appeared to be. But in truth, his heartbeat had been anything but steady since dawn. His dark suit fit him perfectly, but every few moments he found himself glancing toward the chapel doors before forcing his attention back to the minister. Hoss could tell that Adam was getting nervous. Hoss couldn't help but smile as it wasn't that long ago when he was in Adam's shoes and waited for the woman he loved to walk through those very same doors. Hoss couldn't help grin as he asked Adam if he was alright. Adam exhaled softly as he replied back to his brother. "I will be." Little Joe couldn't help but chuckle as he reminded Adam that he's argued with judges, outsmarted cattle buyers and even started down rustlers. Adam smiled without taking his eyes from the aisle. "This feels considerably harder," he told both of his brothers, though Hoss already knew how hard it was. But before either brother could answer him, the music began to change.
It was then that the chapel fell completely silent as every head turned toward the entrance. It was then that the doors opened slowly and soon Laura and a couple of other ladies that Valerie chose walked down the aisle first. All three of them looking like beautiful little China dolls. Hoss couldn't quit smiling when he saw his wife leading the other two down the aisle. Once the girls were in their spots, it was then that everyone's attention turned back to the open doors and there Valerie stood, looking beautiful like the most perfect diamond. For a single heartbeat, Adam forgot how to breathe as he continued to look at his bride. Valeie stood framed in the morning light, her gown glowing softly beneath her veil. The bouquet trembled only slightly in her hands, but her eyes were calm, fixed on the man waiting for her. She looked not only radiant, but more beautiful than anything Adam had ever seen in his life. It wasn't because of the lace or the satin or even the flowers. She looked beautiful because she was smiling at him which caused Adam's eyes to fil with quiet emotion. Everything else in the church disappeared including the guests, the music, the minister. Even the walls of the little church seemed to fade until there was only the woman slowly walking toward him. It was at that moment Ben glanced over at his eldest sone and smiled knowingly. It was then that Little Joe leaned over and whispered, told you to Hoss. Hoss looked at Joe and asked what, to which Joe went on saying that Adam couldn't breathe. Hoss fought to keep from laughing and when he glanced over at Laura, she was giving him a look that caused him to clear his throat and then go quiet. Little Joe saw Laura's glance and simply grinned as he once again whispered to Hoss told you. Meanwhile, Valereie, who was already slowly walking down the aisle, could feel each step carrying her closer to the life they had chosen together. When she drew near enough, Adam finally found his voice. "You are the most beautiful woman I ever seen," he told her above a whisper and with tears shining in his eyes. Valerie's smile deepened as a soft blush came over to her face. It was then that she asked him if he liked the dress in the same whispered voice that Adam had used. A soft ripple of laughter passed through the front rows, which Adam laughed quietly too as he spoke to her again. "To be honest, I never even noticed the dress," he told her as she laughed through the happy tears in her eyes. Then she said that she was hpping he'd say that.
As she reached the altar, Adam gently took hands into his. They felt warm and steady and more importantly, her hands were home in his. The minister smiled, giving them both a moment before speaking. Finally, the music stopped and the minister began to speak. "My friends, we are gathered here today to witness not only the joining of two lives, but the beginning of a new chapter built upon faith, trust and enduring love," he started. Neither Adam nor Valerie looked away from each other as the minister spoke. They had weathered hardships, shared laughter and even found comfort in silence. And now, before everyone they loved and knew, they stood ready to promise forever to each other. And for the first time all morning, every trace of nervousness vanished. There were only peace and love that remained. And only the certainty that, from this day forward, wherever one of them walked, the other would be beside them. The minister then asked for everybody to bow their heads in prayer. And once everyone, including the bride and groom, had their heads bowed, the minister began to pray. "Oh lord, we come to you today to bless this union between Adam Cartwright and Valerie Quinn. Let their true love be a bright light that shines in not only the good weather, but even when the storms of life come too rough and strong. Let their commitment to each other keep them safe from any danger that might come their way," the minister prayed and then went on. "And lord, let their love bring blessings through both health and sickness. In Lord's name, Amen," he finished up and just as soon as he heard the rest of the church say amen, he then went onto start the wedding as everyone, including the bride and groom, looked back up at him. It was then that the minister who turned and looked at Adam with a smile on his face and spoke to him. "Adam Cartwright, do you take Valerie Quinn to be your lawfully wedded wife, to have and hold, in sickness and in health, for richer or poorer, til death do you part?" he asked Adam. Adam glanced over at Valerie, who was still looking at him, and smiled as he said he did. He couldn't help but give her hands a little squeeze as the minister turned to Valerie. "Valerie Quinn, do you take Adam Cartwright to be your lawfully wedded husband, to have and hold, in sickness and in health, for richer or poorer, til death do you part?" he asked her.
Re: A Cartwright Honeymoon Adventure from the Ponderosa to Paradise
from Adam on 07/05/2026 10:57 PMAdam smiled without taking his eyes from the road, the familiar streets of Virginia City coming into view ahead. "He does," Adam answered calmly. "I left the spare key with him before the wedding, and he knows exactly where I'll leave the truck. By tomorrow it'll be back at the Ponderosa, probably with Joe insisting on driving it first and Hoss telling him to slow down," Adam said with a chuckle. Laura laughed softly as she told Adam that she could actually picture that. "So can I," Adam replied with an amused grin on his face. "oe will sewar he's only making sure that everything's in good working order. Hoss will remind him it belongs to his older brother, and Pa will pretend not to notice until Joe starts showing off," Adam told her. "And then my truck will be the one to suffer," he added with a laugh. Laura sat next to Adam listening quietly. She could picture everything that Adam was telling her. That's when she admitted quietly to him that she missed them already. "So do I," Adam told her as he kept driving on. And for a few moments they rode in comfortable silence, the sounds of the truck's engine and the wagon traffic filling the air. Virginia City bustled with life as miners, merchants, and families went about their business, unaware the that the newly married couple passing through was beginning the greatest journey of their lives. Adam guided the truck toward the railroad depot. The great steam locomotive waiting on the tracks breathed clouds of white steam into the morning air while porters hurried back and forth with trunks and carpetbags. The station echoed with whistles, shouted greetings, and the clatter of iron wheels. "There she is," Adam said, nodding towards the train. Laura's eyes sparkled with excitement as she told Adam that she had never seen a train ready to leave from as close as they were. "They're impressive," Adam agreed. "And before long, we'll be standing on the deck of a steamship watching the Atlantic Instead of the Sierra," he told her with a smile on his face. Laura couldn't help but whisper dreamily as she started to describe the Bahamas with its white beaches and warm sunshine. Then she went on to say that it almost doesn't seem real that they would be going.
"Don't worry, it will be," Adam said. "After several days of trains, changing lines, and crossing half the country," Adam finished as Laura smiled as she told him that he certainly knew how to make paradise sound practical. "Someone has too," he said with a chuckle in his voice. He pulled the truck to a stop beside the freight platform reserved for long-term parking. Shutting off the engine, he stepped out first before walking around to Laura's side. Once on Laura's side, he opened the passenger door and offered his hand to her. "Mrs. Cartwright," Adam said with a huge smile, loving the sound of her being called Mrs. Cartwright. She accepted it with a smile that warmed him more than the morning sun. Laura smiled and told him thank you only she called him Mr. Cartwright with a smile on her face. As her boots touched the ground, she slipped her arm through his. Together they stood for a moment, looking at the waiting locomotive. Adam quickly closed the door as they stood there. And it was Laura who broke the silence by softly saying that this was it. Adam nodded without regret or hesitation. "This is definitely it," he told Laura just as a porter approached, tipping his hat. Then he asked Adam if he needed a hand with his luggage. "Yes, thank you," Adam replied happily. "We've got two trunks headed east," he added. Within minutes Adam and Laura's trunks were loaded onto the baggage cart while Adam took one last look at his truck. He reached into his pocket, withdrew the extra key tag Ben had given him to leave behind and tucked it beneath the driver's seat where his father had agreed to retrieve it. "Pa won't have any trouble finding the truck now," Adam told her as he locked the truck up and then took her hand once again. Laura then gave it a squeeze as she was asking him if he was ready. Adam turned to look at his bride, her eyes bright with excitement and love and smiled. "I am now," he said smiling. Then arm and in arm, the newlyweds walked toward the depot platform just as the conductor was called, "All aboard!"
Neither Adam nor Laura noticed the tall, well-dressed stranger standing near the far end of the platform. Hedden behind a newspaper, he lowered it just enough to watch them board the train. A faint, knowing smile crossed his face before he folded the paper beneath his arm. Adam and Laura's honeymoon had officially started and somewhere beyond the next whistle stop, the first unexpected chapter of their adventure was already waiting. Adam walked with Laura until they found their seats. "Would you like an aisle seat or would you like to sit next to the window?" Adam asked her as he stood there waiting for her to reply to him. But instead of telling him her answer, Laura showed him what she wanted by sitting down next to the window. "Ah, excellent choice, my lady," he said playfully as he sat down next to his beautiful wife. Laura playfully slapped him and told him to be good. They both let out a laugh and then went silent for a few minutes. It wasn't a bad silence but more of a comfortable silence as people, including the stranger who had strategically watched Adam and Laura boarding, got on and took their seats. The stranger made sure to sit far from Laura and Adam, but yet close enough that he could keep an eye on them. Once the train was loaded up and everybody who was supposed to be on it was seated, it was then time to go and slowly the train began to pull out of the station. Adam looked over at Laura and as he watched her eyes lighting up as they were pulling further and further away from the depot, not only did the smile on his face grow, but he could feel his heart start to sore with joy. Adam reached over and took Laura's hand into his and gave it a little squeeze. That caused Laura to turn her head to look at him, with of course, a huge smile on her face. "As soon as we get going good," Adam said as he returned her smile with his own smile. "I'll take you to the beverage car and we can get something refreshing for our journey," he told her and then went on. "Then I will show you were we will be sleeping, which I think you will love our state room," he told her with a smile as he gave her hand another squeeze while waiting for her to say something.
Re: The Greatest Blessing on Mother’s Day on the Ponderosa (2026)
from Adam on 07/05/2026 01:17 PM"I am taking you upstairs so that you can get dressed," Adam told her as he slowly took one step at a time until he reached the top of the stairs. That's when Laua told him that she was perfectly capable of walking, though Adam just smiled. "I know you are, but I wanted to carry the mother of my daughter walk upstairs on Mother's Day," he said as he walked down the hall to their room. Once Adam got to their room, he reached out and carefully and gently opened their bedroom door. Then Adam carried Laura over the threshold and once in the room, he sat her down. Laura still had her arms around his neck, despite that she was now standing before him. He had his arms around her mid-section, and they were looking deep into each other's eyes. "Now, you get yourself ready and I'll go get Liz ready and we will meet you downstairs in ten minutes," he told her. Laura said okay but she wasn't about to let Adam get away just yet. In fact, she leaned up and after tilting her head, kissed him softly, letting her lips softly brush against his before pressing their lips together. It was Adam who finally pulled away, not because he wanted to but because he needed too. Adam brushed her face softly with a smile on his face. "Ten minutes," he repeated and then pulled himself away and turned to leave the room. After Adam left and went into Elizabeth's nursery, Laura sighed and then began to get dressed. Ten minutes later, all three of them were downstairs in the living room. Elizabeth was in Adam's arms, wrapped warmly for the morning air and Laura was standing besides, waiting for Adam to tell her what was next. "The first thing I want you to do is take Lizzie," he told her and though Laura looked at Adam puzzled, she took the baby into her arms and held her gently to her bosom. Adam smiled as he took Laura by the hand and though neither one said anything, Laura couldn't help but wonder what he was up too. A short time later, Adam had Laura and Lizzie outside. The air was cool and fresh, filling the air with the scent of pine and early wildflowers.
Laura, who looked down for a moment at Lizzie, smiled as the baby laid quiet and content in her arms, though a lot of that had to do with Laura nursing her about an hour earlier. Once Laura was done looking at the baby, she turned to Adam, who then turned his head. Her eyes followed his and behind their house there was a soft trail that had been arranged leading toward a quiet meadow near the lake. "Ready?" Adam asked as he still held Laura's hand gentle but firmly. Laura looked down the path and then back at Adam and she nodded and soon they were walking down the path. The moment they started down the path it was then that Laura noticed the wooden hearts and what they said and her eyes lit up as she read each one. Along the path, Adam had placed small carved wooden hearts, each one etched by hand: **Faith**, **Hope**, **Love**, **Family**. Laura walked slowly, still holding the baby close. She turned her head and asked Adam if he really did all of that. "I had help," Adam said with a faint smile, "but the meaning is all the same," he added like it was no big deal. The trail ended beneath a tall pine tree overlooking the water. A simple picnic had been set out- fresh bread, fruit, coffee and wildflowers in a mason jar. But Laura barely noticed any of it, at least for the moment. Instead, her attention stayed on the cradle-shaped wooden bench Adam had built, resting beneath the tree. It was carved with care, every detail smooth and thoughtful, as if it had been made in quiet prayer. Across its back, these words were etched deep into the wood: **The Greatest Blessing Is Love**. It was then that Adam stood beside her. "I wanted you to have a place to sit with her someday and remember this moment. Laura looked down at their daughter sleeping in her arms. A tear slipped down her cheek. This *is* the moment she told him softly. Adam then gently took Laura by the arm as he led her over to the bench. And soon they were sitting together beneath the pine tree, the lake shimmering in the distance. Elizabeth made small, sleepy sounds and Laura gently rocked her as if the world itself had gone still to watch.
Adam watched them both for a long time before speaking. "You know, I used to think building a life meant, land, work...legacy," he said quietly. Laura turned to him and asked him what he thought now. He reached out, touching his daughter's tiny hand as she curled her fingers around his thumb. "Now I know it's this. You...and her. That's everything," he told her as the wind moved gently through the trees, and for a moment, the Ponderosa felt as if it held its breath. Laura leaned her head against Adam's shoulder; their baby nestled safely between them. "Happy Mother's Day," he whispered to her. Laura smiled through her tears as she tells him it's the best one she could ever imagine. And beneath the wide Nevada sky, surrounded by quiet pines and the soft promise of new life, they understood the truest blessing of all-love, made real, in the smallest hands. "I have a picnic laid out for us, whenever you get hungry," he told her as he broke the silence. Laura didn't say anything for a few minutes. She just wanted to stay in that moment for a little while longer. Finally, she began to speak. She told Adam that she would love a little something to eat. So, Adam helped Laura up and once Laura was up, he guided her over to the picnic and then helped her sit down. Then he sat down next to her and as Adam took a strawberry and began to feed it to Laura. "And this is just the beginning of your special day," Adam told her as he watched her bit into the strawberry. "There more yet to come,'' he added with a smile on his face. Laura told Adam that he didn't have to get her anything more and she was going to say more, but Adam put his hand gently on her lips to keep them from moving. "I know I don't have to, but I want too," Adam told her and then went on speaking. "I think the first Mother's Day for all new moms should be not only celebrated, but it should be enjoyed by the mothers, while the father spoils," Adam said to which they both began to laugh as they were enjoying the morning in their own secret garden.
