A Walk To Remember

from Carrie_Robinson on 08/27/2025 01:29 AM

It had been over a year since Joe and Carrie made their relationship public and now that Laura was married to Hoss, Joe's brother, there was no real reason why Carrie should stay, except for Joe. And even though Carrie had had this conversation with her father, he insisted on her going home to at least finish school before even thinking about marriage or even moving back here to Virginia City. And even though it made her sad to leave Joe, telling him, she knew would be the hardest thing she could do. So, she decided she would tell him over a pinic and a walk around the lake.

Before going and finding Joe, Carrie went and talked to HopSing, who agreed to make them a very romantic picnic. Once that was done, Carrie went to find Joe, which he had told her that he would be in the barn moving hay. Or at least that's what she thought the said. Anyway, she shrugged and headed out to the barn. She knew the worse case was her walking all the way out there and Joe not be there. So, Carrie decided to call out to him. "Joe? Honey.....are you in the barn?" she asked about halway between the house and the barn.

Joe and Carrie had made their relastionship public about a year ago. Now Hoss and Laura were married. Joe wanted Carrie to stay in Virginia City with him, but her father wanted her back home to finish school. Joe wasn't gonna be seperated from her, no matter what he had to do. Even if it meant moving to San Francisco for her to finish school, and them move back here after that. Or if he had to talk her father into letting her finish school here he would do that too.

He knew she wanted them to have a picnic today at their spot by the lake. He didn't know for sure what she needed to tell him, but he had a feeling he knew. That's why he already had his mind made up about what he planned to do. Because he was not going to be seperated from her. So he was getting ready for their picnic.

Carrie didn't know that Joe was already upstairs getting ready for the picnic. In fact, she didn't know where Joe was. He wasn't out in the barn, so, Carrie went back inside and decided she would go upstairs to Hoss's old room, which she was staying in, and get herself ready. As she was getting ready for the picnic, she tried to figure out how she was going to tell Joe that she had to go back to San Francisco, which was something she really didn't want too do.She knew deep in her heart that she wanted to stay here with Joe and build a life with him, just the way that Laura did with Hoss. She wanted to be the bride this time and marry the only guy that will ever love her the way that she deserved to be loved.

Finally, after getting herself cleaned up and changed her clothes, she applied new makeup on and once she was looking perfect, she walked out of the room she was in and closed the door behind her. Then she looked down one way and then the other, and finally letting her eyes land on Joe's room. She was thinking hard  as to wheather or not she should go check on Joe or if she would wait downstairs for him.  Carrie thought about it for another minute or two and then decided to go check Joe's room. So she quickly walked over to his door and gently knocked on it and waited and hoped that Joe would answer.

Joe continued getting ready for their picnic. He slipped in his shirt pocket what he had just bought yesterday in town. He knew she would be surprised and he hoped as happy as he was.

Suddenly as he finishes dressing, he hears someone knock on the door. He goes over and answers it. "Carrie" he said, then almost breathlessly he says, "You look so beautiful". He puts his arm through hers, "Shall we go for our picnic?" he asks, picking up the picnic basket.

Carrie blushed as she stood there when Joe finally opened his door. He too was look exceptionally handsme and when she went to say so, nothing would come out of her moouth. She could feel the heat starting to rise as she blushed even deeply as she listened to Joe compliments. Finally, after clearing her throat, she finally was able to get some words out, though the words sound a bit weak, as Joe always did have that affect on her. "Thank you, my sweet Joe Bear," she said with a huge smile on her face. Then she squeezed his arm as they walked downstairs together.

Once Joe had the picnic basket in his hands, she turned and looked at Joe still smiling. "Are we taking your truck or going to use the horses?" she asked him. "I have my riding clothes on if you wanna take the horses," she added, though she wouldn't push the issue any more. In the back of her mind, taking a nice, romantic ride with Joe to the perfect picnic spot would only assure her that Joe and her was meant for each other. But she also knew that Joe had his good clothes on, so if taking his truck would be much easier, she was okay with that too. She would just have to sit extra close to Joe, which made her happy as well.

Joe couldn't help but grin at the way Carrie stumbled over her words—it wasn't teasing, just warm and quietly charmed. The way she said "Joe Bear" settled right into him, like it belonged there.

"Well now," he said, lifting the picnic basket and giving it a light swing, "I'd say that depends..."

His eyes drifted over her riding clothes, then back to her face, that soft smile of his turning just a little more playful.

"On whether you're hoping for a slow ride... or just an excuse to sit real close to me in the truck."

He stepped a little nearer as they reached the bottom of the stairs, his voice lowering just enough to make it feel like it was meant only for her.

"Truth is, I don't mind either way," he added. "Long as I've got you beside me."

There was a brief pause, his gaze lingering, gentle but steady.

"But," he went on, tilting his head slightly, "horses might take a bit longer... give us more time before we have to share that picnic with the rest of the world."

Joe shifted the basket in one hand and offered her his arm again with the other, a quiet invitation.

"What do you say, CareBear?" he asked softly. "You feel like taking the long way with me?"
